Catch The Art of Football Exhibitions in Liverpool this Summer

Bringing football fans a special treat this summer, don’t miss The Art of Football in Liverpool. This June and July, the city will explore football from a whole new angle.

You can look forward to a string of creative events and exhibitions. The season will explore the culture and social fabric to “the beautiful game” in a new, exciting way.

The Art of Football Liverpool

The Art of Football season coincides with the 2018 FIFA World Cup. A fantastic way to look at football from a fresh lens, fans can look forward to everything from photography and football shirts to a fantastic selection of live music.

Unmissable Events and Exhibitions

The Art of the Football Shirt

When: 14 June – 28 June 2018

Where: Camp & Furnace

Taking a step back in time, The Art of the Football Shirt exhibition has been carefully curated by fashion historian Neal Heard. The fascinating exhibition explores the links between football and pop culture.

Showcasing a special selection of vintage, obscure and sartorially sound football shirts, fans can discover how iconic jerseys of past times gained their status. Plus, how the history of the shirts is intertwined with music, politics and fashion.

Common Ground

When: 14 June – 15 July 2018

Where: Albert Dock Colonnades

Football and photography fans won’t want to miss the captivating photographs of Common Ground. This insightful exhibition will explore the ritualistic behaviour of football fan culture and its development over the years.

The display will shed light on how football has evolved from a working class game of the 1980s to the riches of the Premier League. Fans can admire the work of three photographers spanning across various decades.

I Don’t Love Soccer Because Soccer Has Never Loved Me

When: 29 June – 15 July 2018

Where: Camp & Furnace

Taking a look at “the beautiful game” through graphic design and illustration, I Love Soccer Because Soccer Has Never Loved Me presents artwork from international graphic artists.

The work showcased offers a captivating response to an essay written by famous Italian semiotician, intellectual and writer Umberto Eco. The essay is entitled The Word Cup and was written in 1978.

Disco Sócrates

When: 30 June 2018

Where: Constellations

Offering a spectacular soundtrack to the season, Constellations is set to host one-day festival Disco Sócrates. The event will showcase music culture at its best and intertwine social and political themes from around the world.

The day will offer live performances from artists of participating World Cup nations. The musicians chosen will provide insight into the powerful musical movements that are really making a difference.

Soccerama Symposium

When: 12 – 13 July 2018

Where: Liverpool Central Library

Soccerama is an in-depth symposium exploring football through a series of unique conversations and debates. The two evenings will unpick the closely linked relationship of football with key topics including women’s rights, LGBTQ, class politics, race and more.

Thursday 12th July will centre on ‘Football: The not-so beautiful game’ while Friday 13th will be based around ‘From outside the box’.
